Domestic Short Hair / Mixed : : Male : : Senior
Ok everybody, hold on to your hats!!!
This is Sparky. He is a 12-14 year old neutered (as of 07/20!) male. Sparky ended up with us after an unsuccessful rehoming attempt. It seems his original owners placed him with friends and Sparky was less than thrilled about this. Sparky communicated his displeasure by attacking the other animals in the house, urinating outside of the litter box, and generally being a naughty tom cat.
When I realized that Sparky is a senior adult, who has been intact his whole life, I had a new perspective on his behavior. Intact male cats tend to be more territorial than their neutered counterparts; urine marking and fighting are some of the behaviors they may display.
Sparky also bares another cross of a life time of intactness, he is FIV positive. In infected cats, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) attacks the immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to many other infections. Because FIV is mainly transmitted through bites (and Sparky has proven himself to be a bit too frisky) we suggest that Sparky be an only cat. We do not know how he responds to dogs at this times.
Sparky does have a special nostril that gives him character.
As Sparky has gotten settled in in adoption he has shown us his soft side. He really seems to enjoy sitting in laps and giving face snuggles! We have also noted that he has done well with his litter box habits.
